As of 2019, most SD40-2s which remain on duty have been rebuilt in-kind and likely will perservere for several decades. A typical spotting difference between older SD Pre-1972 and newer SD Dash2 EMD models is older FlexiCoil-C BogieTrucks versus newer HT-C BogieTrucks. Many EMD Pre1972 PreDash2 models (EMD#GP\SD38\39\40\45\.) have been rebuilt with improved Dash2 components and controls this often includes replacing the less reliable 20v645E with the popular 16c645E or newer 12c710G engine, and upgrading electrical subsystems. The SD40-2 remains popular nearly 50 years after the first was built. Various customizations led Algeria to receive their version of a SD40-2, known as GT26HCW-2. To suit export country specifications, General Motors designed the JT26CW-SS (British Rail Class 59) for Great Britain, the GT26CW-2 for Yugoslavia, South Korea, Iran, Morocco, Peru and Pakistan, while the GT26CU-2 went to Zimbabwe and Brazil.
